Floodplain Forests
Floodplains have special plants that are adapted to inundation and fluctuating water levels. The Sudbury River flowing through the Greenways Conservation Area in Wayland, MA, offers nearly half a mile of shoreline with typical small-river floodplain vegetation. Join an easy walk along this federally designated “wild and scenic river,” with stands of silver maple (Acer saccharinum) and red maple (Acer rubrum), and shrub swamps of buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis). You will also see other typical denizens such as basswood (Tilia americana), swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor), and American elm (Ulmus americana).
